Tell the White House: Stop Tearing Families Apart

We are a nation of immigrants. This statement is a source of our national pride. And yet, what is easily forgotten is that we are a nation of immigrants who have immigrated in a variety of ways — sometimes with and, yes, sometimes without proper documentation.

The American Jewish community is no exception. Many of our ancestors stood in the famous lines at Ellis Island. But many also walked across the border from Canada or Mexico. Many were smuggled to our shores in boats. Between 1921 and 1965 alone, tens of thousands of Jews are estimated to have entered the U.S. without documentation.1 Those who argue that today’s immigrants are somehow “different” are often ignoring their own history.

We are not only a nation of immigrants — we are a nation of values. The American Jewish community not only owes its existence to our ancestors who risked everything to come to this country, but thousands of years of living as outsiders throughout the world, and the sacred teachings of our tradition, have taught us the core values of compassion, families, and welcoming the stranger.

As the Director of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, I urge you curb the nearly 1,800 deportations that occur each day. Bend the Arc continues to work closely with our allies to pass legislation to fix our nation’s broken, unjust and immoral immigration system. Yet, until we are successful, it is crucial that your Administration takes the steps that are within your power to see that thousands of immigrants, who have committed no offense other than seeking to build better lives for their families without the proper documentation, are not needlessly deported.

It is time to stop tearing families apart.

Breaking: Director of Bend the Arc Jewish Action, Hadar Susskind, has been arrested outside the White House for calling on the Administration to stop inhumane deportations.

The White House says that it will only deport those with criminal records — but it is deporting more mothers, siblings, and members of our society than any other administration in history.

Stand in solidarity with the immigrants, allies, and faith leaders arrested today and sign our open letter asking President Obama to take executive action and curb his Administration's extreme deportation policy today.
